The fact that information could be shielded from damage from virus and deletion by people working on a computer inspired the development of an external hard drive. For instance, it helps people to avoid accidental deletion of materials by kids, and viruses such as Trojan horses. A hard drive can also fail internally while in use. Therefore, an external hard drive prevents such incidences, simply because it is not installed for use on the computer all the time. Loss of information is costly, because such an incidence would mean that the data or information will be re-done or costs have to be incurred for retrieval and recovery.
