Mozilla have revealed two new ‘developer handsets’ which will be used to test the new Firefox OS when it’s finally finished.
Mozilla have already declared that it won’t be launching its own hardware to support their Firefox operating system when it’s finalised, but the producers of the Firefox web browser have revealed two smartphones, Keon and Peak, which will be used to test the Firefox OS.
Firefox OS has been pitched as a low-cost competitor to Android, and the specifications Mozilla have released have also hinted at low price-tags.
The Keon has a 3.5inch HGVAtouchscreen and a 3-megapixel camera, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon1GHz processor, with the Peak boasting a more powerful 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4.3inch qHD touchscreen and two cameras, an 8-megapixel camera with flash-feature on the back, and a 2-megapixel camera on the front. Both phones have a 4GB of integrated storage which can be expanded with a MicroSD card.
The new Mozilla Firefox OS is one of a number of new smartphone operating systems that are relying heavily on web technologies, including Canonical's Ubuntu for phones, Sailfish from upstart Jolla, and Tizen, which is backed by Samsung Electronics and Intel.
The devices have been made in collaboration with Geeksphone and Spanish carrier Telefonica, which has already confirmed it will support the web-based Firefox OS on commercial devices expected late 2013.
On Mozilla’s blogging site ‘Mozilla Hacks’, the company said: “Developer preview phones will help make the mobile web more accessible to more people. Developers are critical to the web and to Mozilla’s mission to make the web accessible to everyone.
“Hundreds of millions of people worldwide use Firefox to discover, experience and connect to the Web. A web based on open standards and open technologies. We couldn’t have done this without web developers.
“Now we are working on bringing the power of the web to mobile, through Firefox OS, along with all the power of open standards and an open community, and once again, we’d like to invite web developers to join us.“
